Hassidic Courts

Sun 1 Apr. Photographs from Israel by Gil Cohen-Magen Thursday, March 1, 2012 - Wednesday, May 30, 2012 As an Israeli photographer for the Reuters news agency, Gil Cohen-Magen was assigned to take pictures of Jewish customs in the ultra-Orthodox community of Mea She’arim. This experience grew into a decade-long project, during which Cohen-Magen built personal bonds within some of Israel’s most cloistered Hassidic communities. As doors began to open up for him, he gained unprecedented access to rituals, holiday celebrations, weddings, and scenes of everyday life. A series of these photographs will be on view on the 7th floor of Spertus and can be seen as part of a free self-guided tour. Just stop in the Spertus Shop in the lobby and ask for your complimentary copy of. 610 South Michigan Ave., Chicago, 60605. Ellie Sandler, 312.322.1700. Spertus Museum - [email][events]

Memoir of a Jewish Athlete in Apartheid South Africa

Tue 17 Apr. Join Lorraine Lotzof Abramson, author of My Race: A Jewish Girl Growing Up Under Apartheid in South Africa as she discusses her personal experience as a gifted Jewish athlete growing up under the apartheid system of South Africa and her growing unease with the system of social inequality that simultaneously excluded her and celebrated her. Having escaped oppression in Eastern Europe, her grandparents found themselves in another oppressive society but this time they were on the “same side” as the oppressors by virtue of their white skin. How they lived in that society and dealt with this situation, is part of her story.
