Ongoing Tuesdays. A vibrant community-based dance and movement class designed to promote health, joy, and connection among older adults, particularly seniors of color within the Gainesville Duval community. The class combines gentle movement, rhythmic expression, and culturally relevant music to encourage physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being. This program of free weekly dance classes is designed for participants over 60 with the focus on fun, fitness, creativity, and community using easy dance techniques from jazz, modern, ballet, and various national styles that contribute to experiencing the joy of motion. By creating an original dance almost every week, participants have fun with others, develop a sense of accomplishment and help retain independence through maintaining and enhancing fitness, and general wellness. Encore Dancers Workshop provides dancers over 60 with an opportunity to continue their practice in an appropriate environment. The sessions consist of warm-up, skills and conditioning, creative exercises, and dance phrase work using concepts primarily from ballet and modern dance and incorporating input from participants. The classes focus on fun, fitness, community, collaboration, creativity, and goals important to the group. Ongoing Other, 10-11 am. In-person: Dance for Life is now available in-person at the Senior Recreation Center (5701 NW 34th Blvd) on Thursdays from 10-11 am.
Virtual: Virtual Dance for Life happens every Wednesday from 1-2 pm online via Zoom.
The program offers one weekly online class and one weekly in-person class—participants may join either or both. No dance experience is needed.
Dance for Life is a program for people living with movement and neuromuscular disorders like Parkinson’s, dystonia, MS, and ALS. Classes are led by experienced instructors from UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine and are designed to support well-being through movement, music, creativity, and connection. The class welcomes individuals of all physical abilities—including those who are chair-bound. Care partners are welcome to join in or observe. Gainesville Duval Community, Clarence R.
