Pennsylvania Ballet Program II

Thu 4 Mar, 7:30 pm. The Four Temperaments: Choreography by George Balanchine (Music: Hindemith) Carmina Burana: Choreography by Matthew Neenan, Choreographer in Residence (Music: Orff) The stunning simplicity and angular architecture of The Four Temperaments became the standard for Balanchine works. The work is an abstraction of ancient doctrines that enumerated the four aspects of a person's disposition. A thunderous score and innovative choreography punctuate Matthew Neenan's fiery Carmina Burana, which premiered to sold out audiences in 2007 when The Philadelphia Inquirer declared it "simply scintillating… steamy and explosive…a triumph." Neenan fuses the power of Carl Orff's classic work with his eruptive movement and existential sets. 260 South Broad Street, Suite 901, Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, 19102. 215-893-1999. Karen Armstrong: The Case for God

Tue 9 Mar, 7:30 pm. Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 7:30pm Interviewer TBD Tickets: $9 Moving from the Paleolithic age to the present, Karen Armstrong details the great lengths to which humankind has gone to experience a sacred reality – God. In her new book, she speaks of the significant number of modern people who want nothing to do with God or who question the efficacy of faith, and she examines why it is that theists and atheists speak about God in a way that profoundly differs from our ancestors. Armstrong makes a compelling case for drawing on the insights of the past in order to build a faith that speaks to the needs of our dangerously polarized age. She is the author of numerous books on religion, including A History of God, The Great Transformation and The Spiral Staircas. located at the JCC of Mid-Westchester, 999 Wilmot Road, Scarsdale. Double Indemnity

Wed 10 Mar, 6-7:50 pm. Double Indemnity by Billy Wilder (1944, 107 min.). Controversial in 1944—and nearly prevented from release by the combined efforts of Paramount, the Hays Office, and star Fred MacMurray—Double Indemnity pushed cinematic boundaries depicting murder, deceit, and an overtly sexual female lead, but its eventual release allowed film noir to flourish. In a legendary performance, Barbara Stanwyck plays a young woman who murders her husband for his insurance money. Using her powerful sexuality, she manipulates insurance agent Walter Neff (MacMurray) in order to get it. When their plan begins to unravel, so does Walter's conscience. Written by Raymond Chandler (based on a story by James M. Cain), Double Indemnity embodies the hard-boiled detective novel tradition. 465 Huntington Avenue, Remis Auditorium, Boston, 02115-5597. 617-267-9300. Museum of Fine Arts - [email][events]

Pennsylvania Ballet Program II

Thu 11 Mar, 7:30 pm. Neenan fuses the power of Carl Orff's classic work with his eruptive movement and existential sets. 260 South Broad Street, Suite 901, Kimmel Center, Philadelphia, 19102. 215-893-1999.
