MesorahDC Shabbat Services

Fri 1 Jun. 6:45 p.m. (Friday Night Services; Dinner to follow) On the first and third Friday nights and Saturday mornings of the month, MesorahDC helps young, single professionals experience a beautiful — and tasty— Shabbat. To usher in the Shabbat, we begin with a traditional, easy-to-follow service, based around the stirring melodies of the late Jewish composer, Shlomo Carlebach. Explanations and a running commentary accompany the service, so that even people less familiar with it feel more connected. The service is followed by a full-scale, gourmet Shabbat meal on the first Friday of the month, and a lighter dinner on the third Friday, in the social hall downstairs. The cost for the full dinner is $15.00 per person. If you come with a friend, it's half price for. 600 I Street, N.W., Washington, 20001. Michelle Weiner, Community Outreach, 202/408-3100. Sixth & I Historic Synagogue - [email][events]

Our Great Garden: Nurturing Planet Earth

Fri 1 Jun to Tue 31 Jul. The Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam translates from Hebrew to “Repairing the World.” This new exhibition for families and children explores ways in which we can fulfill this value in our daily lives, through appreciation and protection of the natural environment. The exhibit focuses on three central themes — appreciating the beauty of nature, understanding our responsibility to take care of the natural world, and using our resources responsibly — and looks at these themes through the lens of Jewish values. 1109 Fifth Avenue, New York, 10128. Alex Wittenberg, 212-423-3271. Jewish Museum - [email][events]

Ruth Weisberg Unfurled

This retrospective features three decades of painting and printmaking by celebrated Los Angeles artist Ruth Weisberg, dean of the Roski School of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California. In its first complete showing in twenty years, the ninety-four-foot-long masterwork, The Scroll, synthesizes universal life-cycle events with Weisberg's experiences as an American Jewish woman, all portrayed in conjunction with scriptural motifs, Jewish history, and rabbinic legend. In addition to The Scroll, more than thirty paintings, drawings, and prints from throughout Weisberg's career will be on view. 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, 90049. 310-440-4500. Free Shakespeare in Central Park

Sat 2 Jun. 7:00pm in Central Park. See live Shakespeare in Central Park presented for free in a unique setting. “The great appeal of these productions is that they are adapted to work with the park's natural terrain-the audience follows the performance from place to place, as the plot unfolds from scene to scene. The separation between the performance and the audience is then blurred, as our spectators experience the play as if it were happening at this very instant and all around them”. 2121 Hillside Ave., New Hyde Park, 11040. MesorahDC Shabbat Services

Sat 2 Jun. 9:30 a.m. (Saturday Morning Services) On the first and third Friday nights and Saturday mornings of the month, MesorahDC helps young, single professionals experience a beautiful — and tasty— Shabbat. If you come with a friend, it's half price for each. (There i. 600 I Street, N.W., Washington, 20001.
