1942 (Poznan): A Video by Uriel Orlow (Last Day)

Sun 1 Feb. 1942 (Poznan) memorializes a place, a people, and one of the darkest periods in European history. The video begins with a close-up of a tiled floor. The camera then rises to reveal an indoor pool with a lone swimmer in slow motion. As a cantor chants a memorial prayer in Hebrew, the camera exposes the building's vaulted ceiling and seating area above the main entrance, revealing the building's history. Orlow's video is a provocative reflection on the uses of former synagogues in once-vibrant Jewish communities decimated by Nazism and forgotten under Communism. 1109 Fifth Avenue, New York, 10128. Alex Wittenberg, 212-423-3271. Jewish Museum - [email][events]

The eight artists are presented in three galleries and include works by George Segal, Tadeusz Kantor, and Matthew Buckingham. 1109 Fifth Avenue, New York, 10128. Alex Wittenberg, 212-423-3271. Praying in Her Own Voice

Tue 3 Feb, 7:30-9 pm. Directed by Yael Katzir (60 min, Israel, 2008) This powerful film documents the courageous struggle of the famed “Women of the Wall” movement—the group that has spearheaded the battle for female equality in the religious world. Their main focus has been on the Wailing Wall—the holiest site for Jews, where orthodox, conservative and reform women are not allowed to gather and pray. It’s a film that raises many questions about the battle of the sexes within the religious Jewish world. Black and Blakeman

Tue 3 Feb, 8 pm. Lewis Black in Conversation with Scott Blakeman Lewis Black's live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Lewis yells so they don't have to. A passionate performer who is more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon, he's perfected expressing what the rest of us cannot say in polite company. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. It’s no wonder he’s been compared to Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks. By Hermann Hesse Adapted by Eric Hill from the novel Siddhartha and other writings by Hermann Hesse February 5-15, 2009 Laurie Theater The story of Siddhartha is well-known and well-loved, but its origins from the mind of Hermann Hesse owe much to his analyst Carl Jung and his collective unconscious theory of mankind. In this whimsical and poetic adaptation by Eric Hill, Hesse himself tells the story of the young Siddhartha’s journey into manhood and enlightenment as he explores the world and discovers himself. With the help of Jung, Freud and three Hindu Goddesses, Hesse finds parallels between himself and the man who would become a Budha. ‘Siddhartha’ is part of a year-long focus on the history, culture and influence of India in a program sponsored by t. 415 South Street, Waltham, 02454.
