Fri 2 Oct, 7:30-9:30 pm. What difference does it make where we grow up? Probably a lot. It effects our sensibilities and interactions with others, our comfort levels, our sense of belonging and identity. Growing up as the only Jewish family (or two) in rural or small-town America was very different than being raised in boisterous Yiddish-infused tenements and apartments or sprawling Jewish-concentrated neighborhoods in the suburbs. The region made a difference too, and growing up in another country is another experience altogether. Three TCC members will share and compare the memories of their youth, the environments they found themselves in, and how it helped shape their outlook and identity today. The panelists are Devera Witkin, who grew up in the South, with stints in North C. St. Johns, 81 Christopher St., New York, NY, 10014, New York, 10014. Amy Stein, (212) 213-1002. Free. Sun 11 Oct, 4-5:30 pm. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate, we celebrate times in history when dialogue’s light shined through walls of ignorance. While the Inquisition raged thoughout Counter-Reformation Italy, the ghetto walls that separated Gentile from Jew were more porous than impenetrable. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Nostra Aetate and the visit of Pope Francis to the United States, Ghetto/Cappella explores the cross-fertilization of Jewish and Catholic musical cultures that enriched the music of both Synagogue and Sanctuary in baroque Italy. Works of Benedetto Marcello, Francesco Durante, Barbara Strozzi, Salomone Rossi, and unaccompanied Hebrew chants attest to a lively conversation, as do selections from the 1759 Hebrew language librett.
