Sat 5 Oct to Sun 6 Oct, 10 am-2 pm. Richard Powers is a dance historian and instructor at Stanford University specializing in both historic and contemporary social dance. He leads workshops around the world (see below for more about that). His Social Dance class is among Stanford University's most popular courses.
The primary focus of the weekend will be waltzing, including cross-step waltz and traditional turning waltz with a few other dances of Richard's choice. This special weekend is only for those with at least some waltz experience (traditional, cross-step, box, Viennese, etc.) This is not a workshop for waltz beginners. If you already know some basic waltz steps, then this waltz weekend is for you.

This workshop will cover the foundations of contact improvisation. Contact improvisation is a partner-based movement practice involving connection, flow, rhythm, timing, supporting, and being supported. The goal is for dancers to become more attuned to their center and to the subtleties of touch.
Justin will share introductory contact points, supportive structures, and the process of push in pull in partner movement.

Sun 6 Oct, 7:30 pm. We are super excited to announce that we will be in one of the new homes to ecstatic dance as the beloved energy/space of Aurora Healing Arts transforms into HOWL, The House of Waking Life, a creation by Brooke Rosen We are so excited.
Our first dance will be June 30th, 7:30 pm and will be facilitated by the lovely Angela Betancourt. Our dances will then go on every other Sunday from that date forth. Beginning Sept. 1st (fingers crossed), alternating weekends will be hosted by HOWL.
This dance will explore the 5 Rhythms of Ecstatic Dance. In this environment we will let go of judgment of ourselves and others, embrace whatever emotions arise, and feel free to move, shake and groove however our bodies choose.

Tribal Fusion combines the techniques of American Tribal Style, Hip Hop, Classic Westernized dance, American Cabaret Bellydance and much more to create a style that is modern, serpentine, and smooth, Tribal Fusion Belly Dance also uses some of the same movement principles from traditional forms such as Flamenco, Kathak, Odissi, and other folkloric and classical dance styles. Sat 19 Oct, 11 am-12:30 pm. Jean-Sebastien Duvilaire (Babbas) is a Haitian Artist and Houngan who strongly believes in the use of the performing arts to trigger social change. He has trained in African and Afro-Haitian techniques, as well as in classical ballet, modern, and contemporary dance. Babbas has worked with many artists internationally, and travels to teach, choreograph, and collaborate with artists throughout the U.S., the Caribbean, and West Africa. He is the founder of the AfrikAyiti Project, and always wishes to promote Africa together with Haiti in sharing his culture wherever he teaches or performs. He recently moved to Boston, where he has worked with JAE/Jean Appolon Expressions before deciding to continue his work independently from the company.
For now, Jean-Sebastien continues to teach, travel, and choreograph, pursue study of Vodou, and runs a small cacao processing company in Haiti called Tahomey. Start your tango journey with the UF Argentine Tango Club. You’ll be challenged to think and move using tango ideas with an engaging and diverse group. You will do individual exercises and partner activities to explore what tango is all about.
Classes will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays during the Fall semester, with some exceptions so be sure to check each week.
Where: Most classes will be held in Dance Studio B, located in the basement of the Reitz Union. A few will be held in Studio A next door to B. So be sure to just check the schedule information at the door if you are unsure.
What to wear: If you own a pair of salsa shoes or jazz/ballet flats, those work great. If not, bring a thick pair of socks to dance in. Fancy shoes are not necessary and please avoid flip flops or tennis shoes.
